When Closet Organizing, Throw it Away
Of course the best bit of advice that can be given when closet organizing is, “Do you really need all those clothes?” The main reason that you need closet organization systems is… you have too many clothes. Before you purchase anything, first decide what is out of date, which are ragged, and which have buttons missing or zippers which don’t work any more. It’s amazing how many things you own that you really don’t need.
Start by throwing things away. If there’s a stain, throw it out; if it’s torn, toss it. Missing buttons? Throw it away. If you have a rag-bag, CUT IT IN HALF. So many times you’ll have the courage to throw it out, then you’ll see it again and you’ll go, “Maybe someday I’ll mend that”. That’s why you’ve collected so many articles of clothing over the years. If you cut it in half, now, then it won’t just end up back in your closet again in another five minutes.
After you’ve gone through the things the first time and thrown away junk, go through them a second time. This time, think in a different way. This time think, “Will I ever wear this? Is this out of date?” If you’ve had it for ten years, then there’s absolutely no time you will ever wear it again, time has passed and that style is over. It’s time to admit things. “I will never be able to fit into that dress, ever again!” might be the reason. If it’s three sizes too small, it’s time to throw it away.
Closet organizing has everything to do with how much space you already have. If you have two walk-in closets, then you’ll have a completely different task than if you just have one small closet.
If your only closet is a tiny one, then you might consider getting an external closet that can augment the first.
If you have one walk-in closet that already has two shelves above the clothes hanger rack, then getting zipper garment bags or blanket bags, which tend to be bigger and stronger, to organize things. Sweater boxes can also help when you’re organizing closets. Just because something is called a ’sweater box’ doesn’t mean that you can only store sweaters in them. Closet organizing can be greatly helped by purchasing simple containers and then filling them up.
Also, there are generic plastic shoe boxes, and other shapes and sizes of boxes that you can choose from. Just go a Walmart store and find the area where they have such boxes. Before you go, measure the width of the gap which will allow you to slide the box onto the shelf. If it won’t fit through that gap, then it won’t be much use to you.
When you finally say, “I want to organize my closet!” then do it that day. So many things in life are good intentions. Taking action is what is needed. Instead of just thinking, or saying, “I really have to organize this closet some day!” make that day be today.
If you need new closet ideas, use the internet to supply those ideas, or go to your friend’s house and while you’re visiting ask, “How do you keep your closets organized?” Sometimes your friends have already done such things; and their efforts might help you. That’s why you have friends, after all. They might lead you in the right direction. So, when you’re doing closet organizing, think about what you can throw out. Think of what containers you might purchase which will organize the shelves that you already have.
